Advance Payment On House Rent Is Killing The Youth In Ghana – Ghanaian Youth Speaks

Advance payment on house rent is predominantly one the most talk about issues in Ghana, especially among the youth.

The cost for rent per month is quite not the issue but to pay in one or two years in advance is a burdensome responsibility to the youth in Ghana.

Let’s say for example if a house is rented for Gh¢500 per month, the tenant must pay  Gh¢12,000 for 2 years and Gh¢6,000 for a year in bulk. It is more stressful for a young man or lady who receives a salary less than Gh¢1,000 a month or for young entrepreneurs.

Ghana’s Rent Act 220 specify that Land lords can charge  a maximum of six-months’ advance rent, with subsequent rent payments due every six months. This practice according to study and complains is inconsistent in Ghana.

It is also said it’s illegal for landlords to increase their rent charges arbitrarily.

For many years, there’ve been several warnings by government officials especially those from the rent control department warning landlords and supposedly empowering tenants against this offense. But that’s all talk.

On this issue, some Ghanaians suggest that this whole rent charge issue is due to the shortage of housing in the country therefore they encourage the Government to build cheap houses especially for service personnels.

LOOPS GH ONLINE speaking to a certain man called George, he stated that, It’s quite difficult for the rental control to impose landlords who has invested a lot in his building to take not more than six months advance payment.

In a video posted by Ghanaian blogger, Kobby Kyei on Facebook, a young man stated on how advance payment has become a financial worries to the youth in Ghana.

It’s not easy on the street for we hustlers. There is no enough jobs in the country, so the little amount that you get from your hustling, you have to use it to pay your rent.  The government should kindly address the illegal advance payment on house rent. At most the six months advance is ok for us. The young man says.
